Army Surplus – The Best Deal on Military Backpacks

March 15, 2010

The military is famous for making innovative useful gear, military backpacks are no exception. Know as ALICE packs which stands for All purpose light weight individual carrying equipment, these packs were designed for Vietnam. The need for hands free travel and maneuverability was an issue and this pack attempted to solve some of the problems.

The ALICE pack was based on WWI and II packs and was much more sophisticated than previous models. It used an external frame, which allowed for a large capacity and gave soldiers the ability to strap and lash things to the outside of the pack. The pack also attempts to reduce the weight that soldiers were required to carry. The ALICE pack replaced older packs and weight some 2 pounds less than the older models.

The military has been trying to replace the ALICE pack since the 80s but overwhelming popularity has made the transition slow. Today most ALICE packs have been replaced with more modern versions that contain internal frames, suspension systems and even solar charging equipment.

Finding ALICE packs at army surplus stores is still common and a great alternative to other higher priced backpacks. These backpacks are especially good for kids getting familiar with camping and the outdoors. Spending big bucks on a pack that a kid will outgrown in a year or so is not a good investment.

Other military backpacks are also good alternatives to higher priced civilian models. Mesh backpacks for schools that require see through bags can easily be found at army/navy stores. As well as other day packs and ruck sacks which are gaining popularity. The military utilitarian style has gained some traction in the fashion community and is even being replicated by name brand manufactures.

Military backpacks may look a little dated on the trail but they offer a great way to get outdoors and keep the budget realistic. My opinion is that if it is good enough for our boys in the military then it is good enough for me.
