Mauviel Copper Cookware

January 7, 2010

The French company Mauviel has been making cookware since 1830. With all of its experience and continued professional cooking product lines, the company has a reputation for quality. When a cooking set is ordered, it is carefully inspected before shipping and there will usually be a note attached to each piece telling you who inspected it. That kind of special attention is rarely seen in the high speed, machine run, manufacturing companies of today.

The prices on Mauviel cookware sets, running from hundreds to thousands of dollars, demand high quality. Their most popular type, copper cookware, is made by other manufacturers and can be found for a lot cheaper than Mauviel’s brand name products. However, with the lower prices you will not find exceptional attention given to each item. Copper is attractive to many people who enjoy cooking because of its excellent heat conductivity. Many professional chefs use copper for foods that need to be cooked at or to a specific temperature. With some cheaper brands, you may find that the heat conductivity is not as good as it should be. Another worry to be had when buying cheaper copper cookware is that acidic foods like tomatoes may not be safe to cook in them. Without a liner made of different material, such as stainless steel, cooking then eating these foods can make you very ill. Stainless steel lining, like what is found on Mauviel’s cookware prevents copper from seeping into your food and makes them safe to eat.

Even with the high quality of Mauviel products, the cookware can still be ruined if it is not used or cleaned properly. Experts recommend avoiding abrasive commercial cleaners on any cookware. Heavy chemicals and scrubbing agents can ruin your cookware’s surfaces. Copper is a somewhat softer metal, and should be given special care. Some people swear by lemon and salt to ruin common tarnishing problems. Other than that, if you pay good money for your cookware, be sure to soak and clean it promptly after each use, and do your best to avoid burning it.

Professionals and culinary schools everywhere lean towards the Mauviel copper cookware more than the company’s stainless steel lines because of its ability to heat and cool very quickly. Mauviel cookware also offers specialty items, such as a potato steamer, fondue set and wine bucket. The company has also come up with products that they call cuprinox. To create this new line, heavy and pure copper was combined with surgical stainless steel to create durable yet easy to effect. In addition, Mauviel now offers four different design options for the handles on their cookware. This detail option is added mainly for personal aesthetic appeal to the one using the cookware.
