Polo Double Black and VIP Life

Polo Double Black Ralph Lauren

This perfume was launched in 2006 and it’s often confused with Polo Black, not only for the similar names but also for the similar bottles. These two perfumes are actually different. Polo double has an oriental soul, which is an unique case in Ralph Lauren’s perfumes.

The opening notes are oriental, with a light hint of vanilla, plus a soft wood. In the middle notes there is a clear hint of coffee, which makes it smell like Angel perfume for men, A*Men pure coffee. But it only lasts five minutes, as the vanilla notes become more prominent, and it becomes more similar to a mochaccino than an espresso. In the final notes, the coffee is more definite, with a light vanilla which gives the perfume an oriental tone, not to thick nor too spicy.

Polo double is  more suitable for a winter use, or even a summer use, but only in the evening. In the office it’s flexible enough to be worn for a smart business or a casual Friday dress code. On the romantic side, the sweet notes of wood and coffee, supported by vanilla, can be very attractive.

VIP Life for Him by Esprit

This perfume by Esprit was launched in 2009 together with the feminine version, in a limited edition, which is launched almost every year as a variation of the main perfume Life by the same brand.

The opening is fresh, with watery floral notes, and a sweet note that draws attention. It’s probably vanilla at the beginning, which later becomes caramelized. The middle notes are still watery, with a touch of pineapple, which gets lighter and lighter with time, almost becoming lavender. The feeling is of a very fresh, clean, and young fragrance. In the base notes the water fades, and spices become more prominent, like anis and nutmeg (reminding of Opium pour homme poesie de chine of the Opium perfume family by YSL).

The fragrance has a classic style, more modern that young. It’s very good for semi-informal occasions, both at work and social. For romantic occasions, it works better at a very close distance, so it’s more suitable for a couple that has been going out for a while, rather that for first dates.
