Saving Money on Slide Scanners

March 24, 2010

Finding a slide scanner for cheap isn’t exactly the easiest thing you can do if you’ve ever tried it. If you’re in the market for one of these scanners, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Generally you’ll first find yourself at one of the “mega” electronic stores like Best Buy or Fry’s, looking at scanners that are brand new and cost a significant amount of money. You don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money on this type of dedicated scanner, however. In fact, it’s probably not in your best interest unless you really need the newest models with cutting edge technology. Basically, if you’re an amateur photographer who uses a slide scanner only on a semi-regular basis, you might want to consider going for a refurbished scanner.

Yes, you heard me right. Refurbished doesn’t necessarily mean that the scanner was previously abused. In fact, a refurbished slide scanner may be one of the best investments you could ask for if you’re trying to save money. A factory refurbished slide scanner isn’t going to be something like you’d expect to buy from craigslist (that is, an unknown quantity). Any peripheral that’s reconditioned by the factory is going to be thoroughly tested. Each and every component of the scanner is going to be tested, as well. If even one component isn’t working like it did when the machine was originally built, it’ll be replaced. Heck, even exterior scratches will be buffed out if possible (again, if it can’t be fixed, it’ll be replaced). Buying refurbished is a great way to save money and still get quality slide scanners.

But, let’s not forget sites like Craigslist. While you may not know exactly what you’re getting (yes, you’ll be taking a risk there), if you’re truly on a budget, buying a slide scanner from an online classified site can save you a significant amount of money. Shop wisely and do your homework.
