The Purchase and Care of a Men’s Down Jacket

March 19, 2010

If you live in a colder climate during the winter months, winter jackets are an essential piece of equipment. If you line in North Dakota, you simply can’t stay outside for more than a couple of minutes during January without a good winter jacket or you will freeze. And of course, there are many varieties of jackets, each type made for different types of use, so it can be difficult to know where to start when you do need to look for a new winter jacket. A mens down jacket is a great option if you are just looking for something that is really comfortable and warm and there are a multitude of styles with a barrage of features to choose from.

If you spend much time in the moutains, a men’s down jacket is the best protection against mountain elements. There are men’s jackets that are made for this vital role with technical fabrics, tough construction and intelligent features (read… lots of of pockets and places to put all of your essential mountain and outdoor gear). The varieties available vary from hard and soft shells to warm fleeces and toasty puffies. If you are a guy, I am not sure you would want to be seen in a down jacket made for men that was classified as a “toasty puffy”, but hey, maybe you are just fine with that.

There filling material for a down jacket, down,  comes from a bird and it is in fact the breast feathers, or downy feathers, from the breast of a bird, most usually a duck. Sometimes other birds are used like goose down, but ducks are certainly the main source of down for down stuffing material. Such a fine natural product is utilized due to the air space in feathers which provides the required insulation and then the thermal properties which help one of the warmest and finest products to be made. It is what keeps ducks or any birds warm and it also has the great benefit of being extremely lightweight.

If you do decide on a down jacket, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Down jackets can be quite difficult to clean. In the first place they should be dry cleaned, however if you prefer to maintain these jackets on your own then this has to be done with care. All the pockets should be emptied, and when cleaning in a washing machine only the gentle cycle should be used. Excess water should be allowed to drip out or squeeze gently, then lay it down and press with a clean towel to remove excess water. The final drying step should be done only when excess water is removed.

Men’s down jackets can be dried outside in warm weather as long as it isn’t too windy or too hot, or in a dryer, but again not too hot. Once the procedure for washing and drying is over it’s ready to keep you warm on the coldest of days all over again!
