Treadmill Mats Make Sense

February 3, 2010

One of the best financial investments you could make when it comes to exercise equipment is the floor mat. This is especially important for any treadmill owner since treadmills generate a lot of energy when in use. The pounding of the person working out on top of the treadmill combined with the running motor inside creates a lot of vibration and shock that is sent through the only thing touching the treadmill, the floor. This is why a treadmill equipment mat is so important and for the cost it will pay for itself by saving you in the long run.

A standard treadmill mat will measure approximately six and a half feet long by three feet wide. Most mats that are typically made for treadmills will be at least 3/8th of an inch in thickness. A thicker mat will typically offer better protection since there is more material and cushion to absorb the vibrations. Of course a thicker or even larger mat will cost more than a standard sized mat. The material also impacts the quality of the mat and the most common are rubber and some type of PVC foam. Both are great materials since they are durable, provide excellent support, and easy to wipe clean.

After a couple of months of use, there will be dust that has collected on the floor under the treadmill. Without a floor mat to keep the floor and treadmill separated the debris will get kicked up into the air every time the treadmill is in use. With the junk flying around in the air some will enter the underside of the machine and accumulate there until to begin to clog the mechanical parts. This can cause all sorts of problems and costly repairs. A treadmill mat helps to minimize or even prevent such an issue since it keeps the distance between the floor and the treadmill.
